It’s a great place to sit and watch the sea, coconut in hand, and we do actually manage to swim in front of our hotel as the weather is calm and the current is fun rather than surfy during our stay.īut really, it’s all about the diving (and snorkeling) on this side of the island. From cliff edges to black sands, to rough surf seas, Bali’s coastline is fantastic and Manggis itself stretches along the seafront. There are a few beaches dotted around but when it comes to white sands, it really doesn’t bother trying to compete with nearby Thailand and Malaysia.īut it does do seaside. (We didn’t make it across but that was an error and you should go – get the ferry from nearby Padang Bai.)Ĭontrary to all our presumptions, Bali isn’t really a beachy place. We were there slightly off-season – which makes it much more pleasant – but heading away from party-zone Kuta, Seminyak and bypassing the capital of Depensar as quickly as possible will help you really get into the swing of real, laid back Bali. The most famous areas of Bali are predictably the most congested with tourists.
